American Lobby Card Set of 8 11" x 14"

"Road Show" Lobby Card Set of 8 (11" X 14"). When "Gone with the Wind" was originally released in December 1939, MGM printed special "Road Show" paper to be displayed in the few theatres around the country that were showing the film. The paper is different and was used for a very limited release wherein the admission prices were much greater than regularly charged in those days. The regular posters and lobbies would not be issued until February 1940 when the film was released in theatres everywhere. The "Road Show" paper includes the more desirable Armando Seguso artwork. The cards in this set vary slightly in condition, though all are very presentable. One of the oddities of this set is the date stamp "61-17" at the bottom right corner of each of the cards, signifying that they were used again during the 1961 re-release of the film. Do not be fooled by the small ink stamps, this set is completely original! The best card in the set (the Vivian Leigh card) happens to also be the best condition card, rating a solid Fine+ condition, but presenting as Very Fine. There is minor corner wear at all four corners, but the light five-inch corner crease at the bottom left corner is what knocks the grade down from Very Fine. However, this crease is hardly evident from the front of the card, as it barely breaks color in the gold frame area. The card retains its terrific eye appeal and original color; the second most valuable card in the set (the Clark Gable card) is basically equal in condition to the Leigh card, although with different flaws. It has outstanding eye appeal and fresh color, with a heavy one-inch corner crease at bottom right and a minor little scribble of ink pen at the middle of the right border; the card featuring Olivia De Havilland has only minor rounding of the corners and is also Fine+ condition; the Title card has moderate corner wear, a pinhole at each corner, a small piece of Scotch tape on the reverse of the upper right corner and the numbers "54-204" written at the bottom right corner, signifying that this card was also used during the 1954 re-release of the film. Overall, this card rates at Very Good/Fine; the card featuring Hattie McDaniel and other cast members has great eye appeal and color also, with a clean 3/4-inch edge tear at the bottom border being its primary fault. It also has a light five-inch "bend" at the bottom left corner that is noticeable only upon close inspection. The card has very light corner wear and rates at a technical grade of Very Good/Fine, but presents much better; the card featuring three cast members, including Carroll Nye has terrific color and eye appeal also and just has minor corner wear and a light three-inch crease at the bottom left corner. Overall, this card is Fine+; the card featuring three cast members, including Evelyn Keyes rates at Fine condition, AND is neatly autographed "To Gene, Peace, Evelyn Keyes" in blue pen; the card featuring Leslie Howard has great color and eye appeal, but technically rates only Good/Very Good due to a light yellow substance stain about the size of a half dollar, that has bled through from the back to the background image area of the front of the card. Apparently, somebody spilled the substance while the card was turned over, accounting for the stain being larger on the reverse than on the front. The card also has moderate corner wear. Again, all of the cards have great color and eye appeal and the date stamp. They all also have an address stamp on the reverse "Roy's Memory Shop 2312 Bissonnet Houston, Texas 77005, (713)526-5819". A Scarce and desireable, complete "Road Show" lobby card set!
